Why Mathematics?

First, mathematics and mathematics education is what the Hungarians are very good at and in ways that are distinctively effective. But also, it's what is needed to support education in engineering, science, economics, statistics and computer science in both the developed and developing countries. It's exactly what future international leaders will need to know in order to understand the quantitative aspects of the problems they'll face. They'll need much more, of course, but knowledge of mathematics is a necessary component and one that is not so easy to obtain in many parts of the world and across a broad social spectrum. English has been touted as the future international business language, but "mathematics" may be a dark horse contended.
